compelled

"The most powerful expression of noir narrative comes, therefore from something deeper than the iconography of the fallen, sensual angel. It comes from the unlikely relationship between passion and paranoia, a deadly combustion of flammable elements in the mobile world of bourgeois sexuality where winning is all. Success, both sexual and social, is the prime gamble in a culture of risk, but the gamble itself brings in tis wake a whole host of distrusts, shady deals, broken promises, all sorts of veiled unease concealed by smiles and laughter. The combustion, when it occurs, is a kind of perversity which produces film noir at its most compelling."
